Independent Living Age-in-Place Home Safety Initiative One of the Delaware Aging Network’s recent initiatives is helping older adults who own their own homes create living environments that are “elder-friendly.” Many New Castle County homes are not elder-friendly. Homes are two or three stories, often with steps leading up to all of the entrances into the home. Many older homes only have one bathroom and it is located upstairs. Family members who have brought a husband, wife, or parent home from the hospital after a sudden stroke or a broken hip become painfully aware of how unfriendly homes are to those who have become suddenly disabled and dependent on a walker or a wheel chair.
DAN contracts with a building inspector and contractor to provide comprehensive, building inspections for older adults living in their own homes. The contractor and a DAN Care Manager conducts a comprehensive in-home assessment. During this home visit, the home and any concerns about it are discussed and examined. Pictures are taken that illustrate specific aspects of the assessment. The contractor gathers information about the house’s building code issues, possible safety hazards, and other miscellaneous challenges. The contractor gives ideas for ways to make the house more “elder-friendly.” For instance, changes can be made to steps, kitchens, and bathrooms to make them easier to manage. This assessment does not include actual maintenance or repair work. If there is a need for home repairs or modifications, the DAN Care Manager can work with families to locate community resources for repairs, modifications, and financial resources.
